Rituals

RESIDENCY AT WILLEM DE KOONING, ROTTERDAM, NETHERLANDS
10 graduate and undergraduate students came together from Maryland Institute
College of Arts and Willem de Kooning Academy to create the following work.
Our goal was to visualize any data of our choice by using a motion capture suit.
We decided to visualize actions we did on a daily basis.

WHAT IS A RITUAL?
We chose to visualize rituals. A ritual can be anything from a cultural norm or a daily routine. As a team, we thought about what kind of rituals we all considered common practice. We narrowed it down to three: Prayers, Passwords, and Vernacular.

STEP 1
We used the motion capture suit and the Wekinator to
teach the machine our gestures based off the three rituals.

Password: Unlocking our phones is a ritual we perform every day, almost like muscle memory.
Vernacular: Hand movements in different cultures that are used to communicate with others.
Prayer: Actions performed in a religious setting to express our faith.

Going through the motions: inserting our phone passwords data.

STEP 2
We used Unity to convert the movements into
linear data, then applied it to 2D and 3D formats.

STEP 3
The 2D linear data was applied to another machine (the plotter)
to create posters that displayed all the data as a whole.

The final deliverable was a curated exhibition of the visualizations.
